Bété Mask - Ivory Coast

ENGLISH SPEAKING
Dimensions: 37 x 21 x 20.5 cms.
Weight of about 2,140 kgs without packaging.
Materials: Wood, metal, upholstery nails, natural polychromy.
Presumed age: 1980s to early 1990s.
Mask of the Bété ethnic group, from the western part of Côte d'Ivoire, west side of the Sassandra river.
To materialize the hostile forces of the forest, the Bété carved this type of mask that caused horror, the Glé or Gré, with quirky features.
In the past, this mask presided over peacemaking ceremonies after armed conflicts and participated in customary justice sessions.
The mask, carved from a single piece of wood, has an impressive spider face in cubist shapes.
