The Viêt or Kinh (Vietnamese: người Việt or người Kinh) are an ethnic group originating from the northern part of what constitutes present-day Vietnam and southern China. They form the majority ethnic group in Vietnam and constitute 86% of the population (1999 census). The official name of the group is Kinh (meaning "from the capital"), to distinguish them from other ethnic groups in Vietnam.
In China, they include, in addition to Kinh residents of Vietnamese nationality, one of the officially recognized minorities, under the name of Gin or Jing (京 族 in Mandarin), who mainly live in the province of Guangxi (Vietnamese: Quảng Tây).
Geographically and linguistically, the Viets belong to Southeast Asia. But a long period of Chinese rule has resulted in a strong cultural influence that brings them closer to East Asia.
The language of the Vietnamese is Vietnamese. Along with Muong, it is part of the Viet-Muong group of languages of the Mon-Khmer branch of the Austroasiatic family.
The predominant religions among the Viets are Confucianism and Mahayana Buddhism. Catholicism and Protestantism are widespread. There are also local religions, Hoa Hao and Cao Đài.
    The Tho Mâu. Vietnamese shamanism?
The Tho A / au, or "cult of the Mothers". is practiced in north and central Vietnam, as well as in the Vietnamese diaspora. It is a form of devotion which is characterized mainly by sessions during which medium ladies (bà dong) are successively possessed by the Holy Mothers of Heaven, Mountains and Forests, Waters, and Lands, as well as by d other "Geniuses of the Four Palaces". We describe here the pantheon and the practice of this cult, highlighting those of its elements (mediation between the sexes for example) which are akin to shamanism and which could historically proceed from a prehistoric Vietnamese shamanism.
