Conspirator (Original screenplay for the 1949 film)
Publication:
Culver City, CA: MGM, 1948
Description:
Composite script for the 1949 film. With holograph pencil annotations to the front wrapper.
Based on the 1949 Red Scare novel, wherein a young American newlywed learns her husband is a spy for the Soviet Union, and forces him to choose between their love and his dedication to the Communist cause. Elizabeth Taylor's first adult role, and one that many of the film's detractors argued was too mature for the then-sixteen year-old star, who played opposite a 37 year-old Robert Taylor. The film's release was initially delayed due to MGM's fear that it would cause diplomatic problems with the Soviet bloc, and indeed, "Conspirator" was banned outright in Finland and New Delhi, India for similar reasons.
Set and shot on location in London and Wales.
Goldenrod titled wrappers, with an extra light blue wrapper from the final draft script bound in, rubber-stamped VAULT COPY and COMPOSITE SCRIPT / COMPLETE on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 24 and production No. 5304, dated 8-26-48, with credits for screenwriter Sally Benson. Title page integral with the front wrapper, as issued. 256 leaves, with last page of text numbered 125. Mimeograph duplication, rectos only, with leaves dated variously between 8-27-48 and 10-1-48.
